- Bring a reusable water bottle with you. Make sure to empty it before security and then fill it up again before your flight!
- Dress like a local! Pay attention to what the locals wear and follow their lead on what is culturally acceptable.
- Make copies of your passport and important documents before you go and keep them separate from the originals.
- If you aren’t familiar with the host language, learn a few common phrases before you go!
- Respect local customs. Focus on cultural similarities and embrace the differences.
- Consider visiting a travel clinic before going abroad — there’s even one on campus!
- Let your banks & credit cards know about your travel plans so they don’t freeze your account.
- Pack plenty of layers! Always be ready for a change in weather.
- Hang on to your boarding pass — some airlines require it for baggage claim.
- Fill out the IP independent travel form before your weekend trip!
- Take lots of photos and videos to remind you of your experiences, but remember to enjoy the present moment too!
- Be sure to bring a change of clothes and a few essential toiletries in your carry-on luggage in case your bags get lost or delayed.
- Drink lots of water and try to get sleep during flights when you can — this will help combat jet lag.
- Some map apps have download features that can be used offline — this comes in handy when your phone is in airplane mode.
- Many local cafes and shops have Wi-Fi that you can use.
- Have multiple sources of funds and ways to access your money while abroad!
- Skip the public transport from time to time and explore your new city on foot.
- Be flexible. Sometimes during travel, things don’t go according to plan. Be ready to adapt as needed & remember that it’s all part of the adventure!
