  1. Engage with the local culture while you’re abroad.
  2. Bring a reusable water bottle with you. Make sure to empty it before security and then fill it up again before your flight!
  3. Dress like a local! Pay attention to what the locals wear and follow their lead on what is culturally acceptable.
  4. Make copies of your passport and important documents before you go and keep them separate from the originals.
  5. If you aren’t familiar with the host language, learn a few common phrases before you go!
  6. Respect local customs. Focus on cultural similarities and embrace the differences.
  7. Consider visiting a travel clinic before going abroad — there’s even one on campus!
  8. Let your banks & credit cards know about your travel plans so they don’t freeze your account.
  9. Pack plenty of layers! Always be ready for a change in weather.
  10. Hang on to your boarding pass — some airlines require it for baggage claim.
  11. Fill out the IP independent travel form before your weekend trip!
  12. Take lots of photos and videos to remind you of your experiences, but remember to enjoy the present moment too!
  13. Be sure to bring a change of clothes and a few essential toiletries in your carry-on luggage in case your bags get lost or delayed.
  14. Drink lots of water and try to get sleep during flights when you can — this will help combat jet lag.
  15. Some map apps have download features that can be used offline — this comes in handy when your phone is in airplane mode.
  16. Many local cafes and shops have Wi-Fi that you can use.
  17. Have multiple sources of funds and ways to access your money while abroad!
  18. Skip the public transport from time to time and explore your new city on foot.
  19. Be flexible. Sometimes during travel, things don’t go according to plan. Be ready to adapt as needed & remember that it’s all part of the adventure!
